Weather Postponements, Make-Up Games and IMPASSEs

A summary of the current schedule management tools/rules for WEATHER POSTPONEMENT REQUESTS can be viewed by CLICKING HERE.

There are several ways that a weather postponement (WP) can happen. As soon as playing conditions are unplayable due to bad weather, it is the HOME team's responsibility to WP the game and to inform his opponent. Moreover, if there is a high probability of severe weather, the HOME team has option to declare a WP preemptively even if the playing conditions are playable at the time the WP is declared. Again, the HOME team must inform his opponent immediately.

For a thorough discussion of the protocol surrounding all WP, CLICK HERE.

Of course, not all games are WP before they are begun. Many times a game is begun and then called by the chief umpire for unplayable conditions due to bad weather.

NOTE: All play shall not count in any game declared a WP by the chief umpire before it has reached official length.

NEW RULE (2012) - WP do not have to be made up. In fact, they are made-up if and only if both teams wish to make it up.

DECLARING A WP earlier in the day:

    (1) Home team - as soon as you know game is a WP call your opponent and tell him game is WP;

    (2) Home Team - Cancel your umps; and,

    (3) Prior to the game's start time, only the Home Team can WP the game on the website. Simply click the WP icon for that game and follow the on-screen prompts.

Regardless of the type of WP, all games not played due to a WP must be designated as a WP on the website within 7 calendar days of the game's scheduled start. Failure to do so shall result in a PASSED game (fine = $75 per occurrence).

Can either team enter the WP to the website?

    YES.

HOME TEAM ONLY --> Up until the time the game is scheduled to start.
AWAY TEAM or HOME TEAM --> After the game's scheduled start time.

NOTE: The latter prevents an AWAY team from suffering a PASSED game fine if the HOME team should fail to WP the game on the website.

RESCHEDULES - If both teams wish to make-up the WP, they have until 7 days of the game's scheduled start to agree on the specifics of a re-schedule and enter it to the website. Either team can do so.

PROCEDURE: The two teams negotiate where and when the game will be played and update the website by clicking the appropriate rescheduling icon and following the prompts to enter the new date, time and possibly field location. (Usually the home team reschedules the game at their home field but this is not necessary i.e., the teams can agree to play the game at whatever field works best for both teams.)

    What is an IMPASSE?

An IMPASSE is when two opponents have a WP game and fail to enter a reschedule to the website with 7 days of the start of the game that was WP'd.

Beginning 2012, all IMPASSES shall be automatic i.e., any WP game not rescheduled within 7 calendar days of the game's scheduled start time shall be automatically reclassified as an IMPASSE.

Is there a penalty or fine for an IMPASSE?

There is no penalty or fine for an IMPASSE.

Can teams make-up a game after it has been declared an impasse by the system?

Yes, by adding a new game.

Once the two teams have agreed to a game, either team can add the game to their schedule using the ADD GAME function.

Will the new game still count in the STANDINGs?

Yes, provided the game was added to the online schedule BEFORE the game was played and completed before the end of the season as defined in each STANDINGs.

Why do WPs need league approval after the fact?

Because in the past, teams have been caught cheating i.e., falsely declaring games that one team or the other was unable to play as scheduled within the required 7 day window for such requests. The approval process will happen in the background. You do not need to concern yourself with the approval mechanics unless you are contacted by the league. For example, if there were 100 games played in the league yesterday and you entered the only WP and the weather was clear and sunny, you will get a phone call from the league i.e., all WP are now audited.

  • Discretionary Postponements i.e., games postponed not because of bad weather but because one team is unable to play as scheduled.
  • No Harm/No Foul Cancellations and Forfeits
  • One game of a doubleheader was completed but not the other, how do I record this on my schedule?
