Simple 3 Step Procedure re: Discretionary schedule changes vs Play or Forfeit
posted by Administrator 05/18/2011 09:05:07
Simple 3 Step Procedure re: Discretionary schedule changes vs Play or ForfeitNumerous veteran members and new teams alike, seem unsure of how ENYTB's basic rescheduling process work. Here is a quickie outline of the normal sequence one would follow to resolve a typical "My team can't play as scheduled" situation:The Problem:TEAM A ---> I know I can't field a team for a league game that is more than 7 days in the future:The Solution:Step 1: Request NWP from opponent(where opponent = Team B)NOTE: Only applicable if during pre-season Grace Period or if Team A has not used up its allowable limit of NWP = 2.If Team B answer = no, go to step 2.NOTE: If team A and Team B can't find a make-up to Team B's satisfaction, no is the only possible answer Team B can give.Step 2: Request NHNFC from Team B(= cancel w/o penalty)NOTE: Only applicable if during pre-season Grace Period or if Team A has not used up its allowable limit of NHNFC = 2.If Team B answer = no, go to step (3).NOTE: Basic decision here for Team B is whether it wants the wins or not. If it does, it must answer no.Step 3: Play or forfeit. If forfeit:(i) Team B gets 2 wins (assuming a DH)(ii) Team A gets 2 losses(iii)Team A also gets a $75/game fine.(iv) One more forfeit loss for Team A and they would lose their eligibility for any sanctioned post-season play through ENYTB.And, remember, NWP and NHNFC can NOT be used for non-local travel games. The latter are all play or forfeit from the git-go.Also, once the Grace Period ends (May 25), all teams shall be limited to two NHNFC and two NWP for the entire season. Once they are used up, all games for that team shall be play or forfeit. That, in a nutshell, is the ENYTB rescheduling system. It is designed to reward teams who carefully plan their season ahead of time and who reliably play their games as scheduled. Teams who don't will take it on the chin. =======================================================IMPORTANT: There are only 2 significant differences in this system from what has been in place in ENYTB for the last several years.(1) Teams are not allowed to receive an unlimited number of NWP or NHNFC anymore; and,(2) All non-local travel games (designated by a red car icon on your schedule) are now play or forfeit only i.e., you can NOT use any of your allowable NHNFC or NWP to avoid playing a non-local travel game as scheduled. This is true even during the Grace Period.#1 is necessary because nobody wanted to be the bad guy and force another team to forfeit. Instead, they would let their opponent off the hook and then complain to the league. For this reason, the previous system, which relied on teams policing their own schedules, did not work.#2 is necessary because local teams were not treating non-local teams fairly and the latter were leaving the league or threatening to do so if it continued. Since non-local teams are an important part of this league (about 20% and an even higher percentage of our gold teams), it became necessary for the league to do something.Last year in particular, our local teams at the older ages canceled a high percentage of non-local games, but only when they were the away team. Non-local teams can only play on the weekends. Often they play only one DH per weekend, sometimes less. They travel here for 50% of their games. And they often rent DeLutis for their home games. Thus, it is particularly disruptive to non-local members to have their home games canceled. Not surprisingly, last year's experience was very discouraging for them. As a result, several excellent non-local teams at the older age levels decided not to come back this season.By making it very costly for either team to "stiff" an opponent in any game played between a local and non-local opponent, regardless of location, Rule 2 was implemented. We hope to eliminate this problem by focusing on it and thereby regaining the trust of non-local teams in ENYTB. The penalty for forfeiting a non-local DH is the equivalent of forfeiting three local games ($225) PLUS any unavoidable home team cost (umps or field rental fees) plus loss of eligibility for sanctioned post-season play through ENYTB.So, unless you have money to burn or don't care about participating in a post-season you have already paid for, or don't care about being allowed to continue in this league, whatever else you do, make sure you play your non-local travel games as scheduled.NOTE: The same penalty applies to the home team in these contests if they are the offending team. The Executive Board proposed this rule change due to what happened in 2010 and the Members Council unanimously supports this policy.
