I have recently learned there will probably be a new league established in the local baseball marketplace next year. Those of our members with the stronger teams may be heavily recruited to join the new league. We at ENYTB view this as just another battle in the 12 year local Civil War between our league and those who previously had virtual monopoly control over summer baseball locally.Since our inception 12 years ago, we have been outcasts among those who previously controlled local summer baseball. Unfortunately, pretty much all of those same people are still around and have not given up the ghost. Year after year, we have faced one new competitive threat after another from them. They may change their name and add some lipstick, but it is essentially the same people offering the same product for the same reasons.Throughout we have not only grown this league from 8 teams to a high of 175, but just as importantly, we have remained dedicated to our original ideals and goals: to create an open, inclusive, non-political league that provides everyone with the opportunity to own and coach their own summer travel team in a high quality, full-service league. The foundation of our league is our Constitution and By-Laws. From roster protection to tournament berths, we have one set of rules under which everyone is treated fairly and the same. But good intentions and a solid foundation are not enough. The bigger task was to create a league that actually delivered the fullest possible experience for everyone, including the regular season and the post-season. By introducing customized registration and scheduling, competitively balanced regular season play, multi-sanctioning, cradle-to-the-grave age range, and a record number of locally hosted sanctioned tournaments as well our own league sponsored events, ENYTB has met the challenge it set for itself. To our satisfaction, what we sought to create took root. It took several years but through word of mouth, all of you found us. Due to our early successes, and the wide diversity of our product, we suffered a mid-life crisis that threatened our survival: like any small business that undergoes rapid growth, the administrative workload threatened to make us victims of our own success. Thus, we made a monumental decision to begin developing a fully customized website to manage our league affairs. Today, four years later, everything this league does, from registering with our affiliates to individual team registration to league scheduling, to even postponing a game or entering a score, is done through the website. The latest website extension, announced earlier today, is tournament brackets. We believe we have created something special and unique over these dozen years, that is ever-changing and will continue to grow and improve as we move forward. We like to think our product/service is second to none in the world of youth baseball leagues and that it is highly valued by our membership. As long as I'm here, you have my guarantee that none of what is stated above will change. I am sure that those who have served with me in league administration and on our Board, would attest to that. We will adapt to whatever changes in the competitive landscape come our way and make whatever changes we believe to be in our membership's best interest, as we always have. But it is important for our membership to understand that the only way we can fail in this endeavor, is if our membership abandons us. With your support, this league will only continue to get better over time. To imagine what local summer travel baseball would be like w/o ENYTB you need only think back to 12 years ago, prior to our establishment. There was much less opportunity available to everyone and no place at the table for most of you, including myself. And for those lucky enough to have a seat, forget about service, organization or fairness. Everything was a back room deal. The strong devoured the weak. Totally cut-throat. This league was conceived as a reaction to those past abuses. I remain very confident of this league's future for the following reasons: (1) I know the work that it takes to deliver our product and I know what has been offered by our competitors, and frankly, they are not in the same ballpark; (2) I believe our newest potential competitor is fundamentally no different than those we have competed with in the past or currently i.e., they lack the proper motivation, capability and work ethic necessary to developing a competitive product; (3) I strongly believe our league product delivers great benefits and value to our membership; and (4) perhaps most importantly, I believe our membership is here because they are not motivated by political factors and they know great value when they experience it. Thus, I will be quite comfortable with letting the marketplace decide who will succeed in the long-run but I also believe forewarned is fore-armed. Personally, I plan on being here to celebrate our 25th anniversary!
