ALL Extra Play Games are to be played unless BOTH TEAMS agree not to play the game.
posted by Administrator 06/29/2007 10:06:56
Many of you have the false impression that Extra Play Games do not carry the same obligation to play as your so-called Must Play Games. This is NOT true, as explained in my recent email and on the FAQ board. Extra play games are an important component of the regular season schedule for many teams and should be treated no differently than so-called MPG. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ENYTB POLICY SINCE FOREVER:++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++It is equally important to play ALL scheduled games, whether they count in the standings or not UNLESS BOTH TEAMS agree not to play the game. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Because so many members are misconstruing our current terminology that refers to tournament qualifying games as "must-play games" to mean that that they are under no obligation to play their XPG games, we will be changing our terminology beginning next year. What we currently refer to as MPG will be called tournament qualifying games, or TQG, instead. This simply means that these games count in your STANDINGS for a competitive tournament berth. All other games will be referred to as Extra Play Games or XPG. (The league gives credit for this new and much clearer terminology to Jim Gilberto of our Bethlehem 14 travel team.) Teams blowing off their XPG opponents when it comes time to actually play those games has become a significant problem in the league this season and the league feels it is important to do something to curb the problem. Changing terminology should help but will plan to enact other measures as well. OTHER MEASURES:(1) Beginning next year we will begin enforcing fines ($50) for teams with unwanted XPG cancellations. By unwanted we mean games where their XPG opponent does not agree to the cancellation. (2) The proceeds of these fines will be applied to the following year's league registration fees for the offended party. (3) We will also adopt a policy that further penalizes teams with three or more unwanted XPG cancellations by making them ineligible for sanctioned tournament berths from this league.NOTE: During the grace period each year i.e., the time between when the league schedule first becomes available and the season actually begins, teams will be allowed to cancel any XPG they wish, except those involving weekend DHs with teams that participate in this league on weekend DH basis strictly. Once the season officially begins, XPG will enjoy the same "must play" status as TQG.EXCEPTION: A streak of bad weather could force the league to activate its Monsoon Safety Valve - then and only then, teams may apply for hardship cancellations of XPG in order to give preference to making-up TQG. This new terminology should result in a clearer understanding by each team of their responsibility to play ALL their scheduled games, and, combined with an emphasis on enforcement, should greatly reduce the XPG blow-off problem.Aside: It is surprising that this problem has emerged moreso this year than in the past, especially given the excellent weather we have been enjoying. It indicates some teams are over-scheduling themselves by asking for too many games. It is hoped that with these penalties in place, teams will have an incentive to think more carefully about how many games they ask for. NOTE: Teams do not need to have the league schedule all their XPG upfront for them. They can opt to wait and add their own XPG at any time during the season, provided the opponent agrees to the game. There are certain advantages to this approach. For example, teams will have more room to schedule XPG with teams they have already played and who they know match up well with their team. Another major bonus is that XPG games that members add to their schedules themselves, are NOT subject to any of the fines or penalties listed above. Something to keep in mind. The latter cuts both ways. If you want a high degree reliability in your XPG you may want to have the league schedule them. If you prefer ultimate flexibility, you may be better off scheduling them yourself. The website gives every team the capability to add games to its online schedule and they are clearly marked as added by the member rather than the league.
