LMS Tournament Results - And That's a Wrap for 2011!
posted by Administrator 08/01/2011 05:08:05
LMS Tournament Results ENYTB sponsored its Last Man Standing Tournament this past weekend. This is the 12th consecutive year the league has sponsored Season-Ending Open Tournaments for all age divisions. (ENYTB also hosted at least one sanctioned tournament for every age division this year and a total of 13 sanctioned or open tournaments altogether.)This past weekend, twelve teams played non-stop baseball from Friday night through late Sunday afternoon. Five of the 12 teams entered in these tournaments were not ENYTB members, with teams coming from as far away as Syracuse, Gouvernor and New Lebanon MA. We thank them very much! The 12 teams were sorted into two divisions of six teams each: Division I (more competitive) and Division II. Each division was divided into two pools of three teams each: Pool A and Pool B.****************************************************************FORMAT: Cross-Pool Play Followed By Single EliminationPHASE I - Cross-Pool Play (G1, G2 and G3)Teams in Pool A played teams in Pool B.PHASE II - Single Elimination G4 - Semi-Final1st place and 2nd place teams in Pool A played each other.G5 - Semi-Final 1st place and 2nd place teams in Pool B played each other.G6 - Consolation Game3rd place team in Pool A played 3rd place team in Pool B.Championship Game - Pool A Winner played Pool B Winner.*******************************************************************This format guaranteed each team a minimum of four games. In addition, it also ensured the two teams with the best records in each pool of playing four different opponents.NOTE: Four games were canceled due to rain on Friday night. There was no opportunity to make-up games because the tournament had to be concluded in a 48 hour period (due to presence of out-of-town teams) and a total of 20 games had to be played on Saturday and Sunday alone. This was explained to all teams before the tournament began.Final Standings From Pool PlayDivision IPool A.......................................Pool B(1) Bethlehem Eagles (3-0)..............Ft Ann Cardinals (1-1)(2) Northeast Hurricanes (2-0)..........Ballston Bearcats (Red) (0-2)(3) North Colonie Padres (1-1)..........Spring All-Stars (0-3)Division IIPool A........................................Pool B(1) Tri City Bombers (Blue)(2-0)..........Delmar Batsmen (2-0)(2) Syracuse Jr. Chiefs (1-1).............New Lebanon Marauders (1-1)(3) Tri City Bombers (Gray)(1-2)..........Adirondack All-Stars (0-2)Division I Tournament Summary:The Ballston Bearcats, the host team, ran into tough luck. Ahead 10-2 over the Padres in 2nd inning of Game 1, they were rained out. Then they led the undefeated Bethlehem Eagles into the 7th inning before Bethlehem scored three runs on a HR to win the game. Going into their final games on Saturday, not a single team in Pool B of Div I had a win. That changed when the Ft Ann Cardinals woke up to take a big early lead vs the Padres and hang on for a 13-8 victory. The semi-finals proved to be extremely competitive. In Pool B, the Cardinals took a 7-1 lead over the Bearcats before the Bearcats came roaring back to make it a 7-6 game with two innings to go. The Cardinals bats came alive once gain to win the Pool B Championship, 11-6.In a battle of unbeatens, the Bethlehem Eagles prevailed over the Northeastern Hurricanes, 12-11, in a very exciting game. This set up an Eagles-Cardinals Div I Championship game. Bethlehem jumped out to an early lead over the Cardinals but the Cardinals rallied back to make it a 7-6 game, much like the Bearcats had done to them in their previous game. And, in a similar ending, the bats of the team with the early lead, the Eagles, continued to hit and the Eagles won 11-6. The Bethlehem players rushed the field and piled on top of each other in celebration of their hard-earned tournament victory. Overall, the Eagles went 5-0 in the tournament. Each of the finalist teams received ENYTB's traditional three bat, glove and ball LMS trophy and each player on both teams was awarded a smaller engraved trophy. The same awards were provided to the Div II finalists. This tournament was hosted at Abner Doubleday Fields by Ballston Spa Junior Baseball. A very special thanks to John Maresca, his wife Wendy, Alicia and all the other persons at BSPA who worked hard to make this tournament weekend memorable for all. From the national anthem, the announcer for all games on F2, the scoreboard that was always correct, to the fields that were perfectly prepped before every game, the updated tournament board on the outside of the snack bar and the great variety of food offered, including breakfast sandwiches, chicken parmigiana sandwiches, and baseball cupcakes, you could not have done more to make this weekend one to remember forever. Thank you very much! Division II Tournament Summary: We didn't know the final Division II standings from pool play until after 10:00pm on Saturday when a late 7-6 comeback win by the Delmar Batsmen (best record in Pool B) over the Tri-City Bombers Gray gave the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs the 2nd best record in Pool A of Division II. Once in the semi-finals, the Jr. Chiefs took full advantage of their opportunity by defeating the 1st place team in Pool A, the Tri City Bombers (Blue) in a marathon 20-18 game that will be remembered for a long time by all who witnessed it.After two very exciting one run decisions on Saturday, the Delmar Batsmen, defeated the runner-up New Lebanon Marauders 11-5 to go 3-0 and become the Pool B winner.Syracuse continued to take advantage of their good fortune and led the Batsmen 8-6 going into the 7th inning of the Div II Championship game. But Delmar was 3-0 for a reason, as they struck back with a go ahead grand slam HR to take a 10-8 lead. Syracuse continued to battle in the bottom half of the 7th and scored another run but in the end, fell one run short in their miracle run. And Delmar joined its sister team, the Bethlehem Eagles as undefeated LMS Tournament Champions for 2011! CONGRATULATIONS to both Championship teams as well as all the teams that participated in both tournaments and helped make them a memorable occasion for all. Finally, everything I said about the good people at Ballston Spa for hosting the Division I tournament, is equally true for the good people at Spring. Thank you very much for my free fried dough (I restrict myself to one per year!) and I salute and thank Mr. Springer for his usual wonderful job announcing all games on F1. He is the most able and professional local announcer I have ever come across. I wish him the happiest of retirements in case he sticks to his plans. He will be missed by all. We were very lucky to conclude our year with two great hosts for this event. I also want to extend my thanks to Claude Middleton (Northeast Hurricanes) for hosting games for us at the Hurricanes' home field. Claude offered to host when we were in great need: the number of entries in the tournament was rapidly rising and Spring had not yet entered the picture. Thanks Claude and congratulations to your team for having a great tournament! See you all next year!Ed
