It's about 10 days later than I was hoping for but we have finally arrived at the point where I am able to begin scheduling this league at 13U and up.It has taken us three months to get the registration/scheduling information from all teams needed to construct a customized league schedule that meets the overall criteria of all teams simultaneously. It will now take me 3 to 4 weeks to actually construct that schedule. WARNING TO NEWBIES: Please stop emailing me asking if the schedule isdone. PLEASE BE PATIENT. SUMMARY:(1) Registration data has been collected i.e, who wants what.(2) 90% of registration fees have been paid - most of those thathaven't paid have contacted us and assured us it will be paid shortly. Those that have not paid and have been ignoring our contacts will be dropped by the wayside this week.(3) Club Rebates = $4,200! ENYTB introduced rebates in 2007 to its large member clubs that met various criteria in regards to team registrations. I am happy to announce that the total of these rebates amounted to $4,200, distributed among 15 different clubs, for an average of almost $300/qualifying club or one free team (base fee only). The largest rebate was $600, earned by both the CNY Pioneers and Bethlehem (BR) Eagles. Four other clubs earned rebates of $400 ormore, including Brunswick (BR) Buckeyes($500); Guilderland BR ($500);No. Colonie (BR) Padres ($400) and the Greenbush-Schodack DevilCats($400).These rebates were designed to increase participation in the leagueand I while they resulted in some increased participation, they didnot pay for themselves in increased registrations. Nonetheless, I haveevery intention of keeping these rebates in place in coming years, soeveryone can plan on them when deciding how many and/or what teams to put out each year. These rebates also reflect the fact that the larger member clubs contribute the lion's share of league overhead. Thus, on the margin, it is cost justified to give the larger clubs a price break and it is beneficial to the overall league to increase team registrations. (4) Team availability data have been collected.(5) Field availability data, incl priorities etc. have beencollected. (6) Teams have been placed in divisions (based on who signed up forwhat, how many games they want to play and, where possible,geography).(7) Each team's MPGs (must play games) were calculated based on (5).This resulted in various adjustments to (6) to get MPGs under totalgames and team availability. NOTE: Once again, a large percentage teams asked me to schedule themmore games than they gave me availability for. Obviously, this is a mathematical impossibility. This "problem" was cleaned up during the recent "verification" stage. By not wasting my time searching for impossible solutions, scheduling should proceed that much more quickly. (8) All data have been verified. Large clubs were given clubsummaries of all details, including various warnings etc. Clubs havebeen and are still getting changes back to their league reps.Items (6), (7) and (8) have occupied my time for the past two weeks. GOING FORWARD - SCHEDULING SET TO BEGIN at 13U and upWhere to begin scheduling and the order that I proceed is veryimportant to the overall success of this complex scheduling process. For example, because of the way the three tournaments fall in 14U, andthe number of teams that signed up for all three, we have many 14Uteams with very "degrees of freedom" i.e., I need to fill all oralmost all of their game slots when they available in order to justmeet their MPG total. Thus, they must be scheduled near the top ofthe order. Teams that are weekend only teams and travel great distances as well as teams that rent field time on a use or lose basis OR have highly constrained field availability for other reasons all must be put in the front of the scheduling que. ALL MPGs for all teams are scheduled BEFORE any "extra games" are scheduled. For most of you, your games will appear in spurts. If you requested 24 games and you have only 6 games listed on your schedule and it is May 5th, DO NOT ASSUME that is all you are getting. That was simply onespurt. BE PATIENT.As always, if you notice I'm doing something incorrectly for your team, let me know. By incorrect, I mean in violation of what you previously specified. Please don't call me to impose additional constraints or to debate every game I schedule for them (the goldielocks syndrome). I can click a button on the website to black-out every team's schedule page until the scheduling process isended. I don't want to have to do that but if teams persist, I will have no choice but to shut you out. When I'm done scheduling, I will announce it THE SCHEDULE IS OFFICIAL and you will have two weeks to negotiate any necessary changes with your opponents EXCEPT for OW games. Let me repeat, OW games are not included in the 2 week grace period for reschedules. Once set, the OW schedule is fixed!!! (1) I will NOT entertain requests to reschedule OW games!!! For that reason, check your OW TA very closely to make sure it iscorrect. We try to completely fill every team's OW game request i.e., if you make yourself available for 7 games, you should expect to be scheduled to play 7 games. As long as there is a fitting opponent and a field available, we exhaust all OW availability for play.Because OW is a holiday weekend and because we use neutral field hosts for a good share of OW games, who incur substantial expenses to stock up for OW, and because our out-of-town teams reserve hotel rooms etc., it is grossly inconsiderate NOT to play OW games as scheduled. For that reason, we have some special rules/penalties in effect for OW. (2) Unplayed OW games:(A) Neutral field - Any team that can NOT play an OW game scheduled on a neutral field MUST forfeit the game, period. In addition, a fine of $50 for each such occurrence shall be applied. The receipts from these fines shall be given to the host field to offset their incurred expenses.(B) Non-Neutral field - Any team that can not play (for non-weather reasons) an OW game scheduled on a non-neutral field also shall be required to forfeit the game UNLESS your opponent is willing/able to reschedule with you.In my opinion, too much planning goes into OW and families are askedto give up other Memorial Day Weekend activities to tolerate ANYpp'd. of OW games but, for non-neutral field games, the league hasleft it to each team's discretion. This stringent policy re: OW ppd/cancellations is new in 2007 becauseof the inordinate number of late cancellations last year. Too many people, new to the league, are disrespecting their opponents and hosts by standing them up. It will no longer be tolerated. I will survey each club within the next 24 hours to determine whether they want to play OW on a neutral field or not as well as whether they want host OW and/or entertain neutral games i.e., games where neither opponent is a member of their club.Ed
ENYTB records an ASTOUNDING overall berth ratio = 60%!!!Total league registration also grew to 150 teams - a net increase of 5 teams over 2006. Given the loss/defection of three large members totaling nearly 20 teams, that is a very impressive accomplishment. My great thanks to my league reps for their able and tireless assistance since early Septe...
