It's about 10 days later than I was hoping for but we have finally arrived at the point where I am able to begin scheduling this league at 13U and up.It has taken us three months to get the registration/scheduling information from all teams needed to construct a customized league schedule that meets the overall criteria of all teams simultaneously.... read more
THE NUMBERS ARE IN AND THEY ARE GOOD!
posted by Administrator 04/15/2007 08:04:54
ENYTB records an ASTOUNDING overall berth ratio = 60%!!!Total league registration also grew to 150 teams - a net increase of 5 teams over 2006. Given the loss/defection of three large members totaling nearly 20 teams, that is a very impressive accomplishment. My great thanks to my league reps for their able and tireless assistance since early September in this endeavor. My expectation is that having fully digested the effects of the abandonment of the 2005 merger agreement over the past two years, the league is once again positioned to resume a positive growth trajectory. I fully expect to reach our long-term goal of 200 teams in the next 2-3 years. We thank you all very much for your continued support.Because the league has three separate affiliations, and because we will be hosting 14 different sanctioned tournaments (=14 bonus berths) under those three affiliations in the upcoming season, the league will award a little more than one sanctioned tournament berth for every 2 team registrations in 2007 (82 berths/135 eligible teams)!!! That is mind blowing when you think about it.(1) NABF - A total of 53 ENYTB teams registered for the five championship tournament series offered by NABF (14U, 16U, 18U, 22U and Unlimited). We will also be sending the TC Bees to the NABF 17U High School World Series. The league will be awarding 28 NABF berths to these 53 registrants = 53% berth ratio.(2) AABC - A total of 102 ENYTB teams registered for the 10 championship tournament series offered by AABC (every age from 10U thru Unlimited). The league will be awarding 33 AABC berths to these 102 registrants = 33% berth ratio.(3) PONY - A total of 42 ENYTB teams registered for the 5 championship tournament series offered by PONY (10U, 12U, 13U, 14U, and 15). We also will be sending the Chatham Reds17 to the PONY18 Regional tournament in New Hampshire. The league will be awarding 21 PONY berths to these 42 registrants = 50% berth ratio.(2) Another 40 teams signed up for ENYTB sponsored (unsanctioned) tournaments to be held in the 2nd half of July - the Division/League Championships and the Last Man Standing. The league will continue to accept registrations for these tournaments through June 1.This 60% berth ratio is hugely higher than any other travel league I know of. Some leagues send one or two teams per age division. Others send as many as 25% of all teams. We are more than double the rate of any other league! Tournament eligibility and hosting has a price tag. Those 82 berths will cost this league more than $20,000 in 2007 in national registration fees alone. Add on another $25,000 plus in umpire fees and baseball costs for the 14 sanctioned tournaments ENYTB will be hosting in 2007. Allowing for those teams that did not sign up for any tournament eligibility, the league's average cost per team for sanctioned tournaments is well over $300/team. That is what you are paying in ACTUAL sanctioned tournament costs alone i.e., that is our out of pocket costs to purchase 82 sanctioned tournament berths and host 14 sanctioned tournaments. What is the community benefit of this $45,000 expenditure? Not only does this $45,000 expenditure result in 80 plus ENYTB teams participating in a national championship tournament series (60% of teams registered and nearly 1,000 players and their families) but the entry level tournament for ALL of these tournaments will be hosted locally, saving those 1,000 families an estimated $500,000 in travel costs. This estimate would be even higher if we also accounted for the lost work time that is avoided. To this already great benefit add the many thousands of dollars earned by our tournament hosts through their concessions. And they earn every penny of it, working hard on behalf of their organizations and this league to keep their fields beautiful and their concessions staffed. We are extremely thankful to those of you that host for us. I know the money is very secondary and that your primary motivation is to allow this league to continue doing what it has been doing for 4 years now, acting as a regional host center for 3 different sanctioning bodies to benefit local baseball - the players and their families.Everyone should keep these impressive numbers in mind whenever the other side (henkles et. al.) preach their mantra that this league "charges too much". This league is an incredible value for the tournaments alone. The numbers don't lie. But it is about more than the tournaments.Shortly I will begin customizing over 3,000 games for you to your exact specifications and "must play" requirements. Your schedule will include opponents selected to offer your team with competitively balanced play and a realistic chance of winning one or more of these 82 berths. Your games are also scheduled to minimize travel distances during the week and overall. This is a level of service not provided by any other league that I am aware of. I have also been told by numerous members of this league over the years that regular season travel games in this league generate more than double the average concession revenue of other regular season games held at their fields, often easily topping $300/game. Even at an average of $200/game, concession revenue alone from the games I schedule exceed the total revenue collected by this league. That does not include the player registration money, sponsorship money, other fund-raising, local government assistance and NYS government grants that are other sources of member income, in part as a result of participation in this league. This league is a partner with each member, helping each of you to attract and retain players by offering quality balanced competition and all the baseball you want all the time. As I've said before, there are lies and damn lies being planted in people's minds by the henkels et. al. regarding the economic costs/benefits of playing in this league, and the supposed "price gouging" by this league. These are damn lies but they have been effective as they have harmed us, as they were intended to do. These lies were cited as a major reason for leaving by the 10 or so clubs and their estimated 50 teams that have left us the past two years (all were Babe Ruth organizations). Fortunately, through continued growth, we have offset half those losses but we have still lost a full 25% of what our membership would have totaled in 2007. It is for that reason that I believe it is important that I keep making the economic case for this league. I fully understand that anyone who doesn't value what this league program offers e.g., sanctioned tournament play, customized scheduling against balanced competition with a wide diversity of classified teams, roster protection, a first class website and league reps available to assist with your club's needs, may in fact be better off joining a league that charges next to nothing and offers little more, but I want people to have the facts when they evaluate the various programs side-by-side and not get hoodwinked by the damn lies.
