PONY allots each League a single berth in each of its age division tournament series. (For that reason, bronze teams are not eligible to compete for PONY berths.) PONY's pricing policy in the 18U division is different than in the other age divisions, making it too costly to register multiple teams and allow them to compete for the single berth. Thus, instead, we offer the PONY 18 berth as a direct buy-in on a first come first served basis. The Rotterdam Rangers have informed me they would like to purchase that berth this year. This team has gone to a PONY tournament every year all the way up so this is a good fit. As explained in the 13u/14u meeting this past Sunday, the League is going to try something entirely new in the 14U division this year. Because that tournament is at the end of July and does not interfere with the AABC or NABF tournaments, we are going to use that berth to send an ENYTB ALL-STAR team to the PONY Regional. Since our regular teams are quite competitive in these tournaments, we thought this would be a golden opportunity to possibly advance to the PONY 14U World Series, held outside Pittsburgh at PONY's new world headquarters. PONY is structured like Babe Ruth in some ways. Almost all PONY members run house leagues. When I attended the PONY national meetings a couple of years back, we were a curiosity to other members because they were unfamiliar with travel leagues like ours. They all run house leagues and use the PONY tournaments series as their ALL-STARS. The PONY rules allow tournament teams to be formed from players from any of the registered league teams. ENYTB will pay to have all 14U teams registered PONY this year. We are looking for a sponsor to help with the uniforms. If you or anyone you know would be interested in doing so please contact me. The Board has appointed Jim Moran to manage our first ever ALL-STAR team. Jim has been with the League many years, having had a long successful run with his Latham Reds teams, and sits on the Executive Board as a Commissioner. Jim will have full autonomy to select whomever he wants as coaches and players. What we would like you to do is to send Jim an email with the names of players that you play AGAINST in the 14U division, and outstanding 13 year olds as well, that you think Jim should consider for this team. Jim will be attending games and scouting this division as well. If you point out a top player to him, he will likely make sure he sees a game with that player. The whole thing is experimental, we will see how it is received and we will interview the coaches and players after the fact to see if this is the kind of thing we'd like to do every year. Bottom-line: In the 14U and 18U divisions, teams should NOT select the PONY tournament eligibility option as those berths are already committed.
